Bastard son of a rich humble landowner and a provincial one, spends his first years in the property of his father and is treated like a laborer more, suffering hunger, cold and the whip of the overseer. To the 14 years, the priest of the town sends it to a capital school for orphans, taken care of by monks. With work and study he manages to be received from medical surgeon. He dedicates himself to take care of needy until its father - whose legitimate children and wife had passed away years back -, he recognizes in his deathbed like son and heir. Manuel is decided, audacious, noble, brave, generous, of few words and apparently hard, but at heart he is tender and good natured. Since he has lacked family wishes a wife and children fervent. Of liberal ideas, he detests the aristocrats, to whom she considers moral hypocrites, devoid and banal. One falls in love with Matilde and, being believed corresponded, house with her, thus beginning his misfortune.
